WHY IS EARLY LEARNING IN PRESCHOOLS AND CHILD CARE CENTRES SO IMPORTANT?
- Currently one in four British Columbia children will begin kindergarten without the skills they need to succeed. In Campbell River the number is a startling one in three children.
- Children who participate in high quality early learning experiences fare better in school.
- Quality child care has been identified as a primary need of working families.
- Limited access to quality child care has been cited as a key factor that makes it difficult for employers to attract and retain employees.
- Research has shown the correlation between quality early learning and future success for both children and communities. For our at risk children, every $1 invested in quality care results in a $13 savings in later social costs according to The Early Years Study 2: Putting Science into Action (March 2007). That 1300% return on investment accrues from lower crime rates, higher lifetime earnings, reduced remedial education costs, and reduced health care costs.
